Born December 8th, 1942. K&K Center of the Beat/Retna. On that album, there are strings and beats, but it isn't very full musically, so she has to do all the dynamics and everything. If you really want to hear what she can do, listen to "It's Oh So Quiet," from Post: She can go from zero to 60 faster than any other vehicle in terms of singing. The gravelly crooner who brought so much soul to Seventies rock & roll left school at 15 to go to work as a silk-screener. I had this little handheld transistor radio that I used to sleep next to," Stewart remembers. I would listen to all the black singers that came over from America - Sam Cooke, Otis Redding, blues singers like Howlin' Wolf and Muddy Waters.

And while female singers were prominent, there were almost never any women playing instruments in the band. The music industry, like most occupational fields in history, had its own harmful gender roles, and the gist of it was that women were pretty singers and men were serious musicians. The artistry of their music tells another story and speaks - or sings - for itself. Pop hits, country ballads, punk bangers and jazz standards, the best female singers' work is essential listening. Aretha Franklin, 1960s. Much progress had been made by the late '70s - while punk rock was in some ways a throwback to rebellious '50s music and garage rock, this time around there was a place for women that didn't exist before. Patti Smith, Debbie Harry, Chryssie Hynde, Siouxsie Sioux - these women were creating the role of rock and roll frontwoman as they went along.
The 70 s was a golden decade for music. A time when real singers, sang real songs, mostly self written. Real vocals sung without the need for auto tune, and resorting to wearing boob tubes and miniskirts half way up the crack of their ass to get noticed. How many of todays manufactured talentless poseurs could cut it in the 70 s? Not many! So many 70 s female singers to choose from I find it hard to pick a favourite Ann Wilson, Kiki Dee, Linda Ronstadt, Melanie Safka, Aretha Franklin, Dusty Springfield, Cass Elliot, Stevie Nicks, Karen Carpenter. I could go on so I will. She did the first album of standards, 'Torch' (and followed up with the more over the decades), but Linda Ronstadt got all the media blitz with 'What's New'. Listen to Torch then What's New and you'll know who the real queen is. I have always felt that Carly's songs are so real and lack pretension.
