In concert appearances, Zehn is a bit more selective in presenting Catalogue d'Oiseaux and is seldom required to perform this long work at a sitting. That does not mean, however, that he doesn't know the whole work, and Zehn's complete traversal of Catalogue d'Oiseaux is one of the most valuable contributions that the budget Arte Nova label has made to contemporary music recording
Catalogue d'oiseaux ("Catalogue of birds") is a work for piano solo by Olivier Messiaen composed of thirteen pieces, written between October 1956 and September 1958. It is devoted to birds and dedicated to his second wife Yvonne Loriod. The work was premiered by Yvonne Loriod on 15 April 1959 in Paris, Salle Gaveau, for the concerts of the "Domaine musical" organized by Pierre Boulez. For these pieces, Messiaen did not want to be limited to the evocation of the bird of which each of it bears the title.

Robert Sherlaw Johnson. Robert Sherlaw Johnson's pioneering work on the music of Olivier Messiaen has become the foundation stone upon which all Messiaen scholarship is based. The appendices include a complete chronological list of works, a bibliography and a list of bird names.
The return to the catalogue after three decades of Felicity Palmer's ravishing performance of the orchestral version of Poèmes pour Mi under Pierre Boulez is also good news, while Antál Dorati's recording of La transfiguration should be compulsory listening for anyone remotely interested in the composer's mature style. Johnson covers all the main works up through 1983, with an especially interesting chapter on Catalogue d'Oiseaux. This book gave me a fresher and deeper understanding of what Messiaen did in his music, why he did it, and how it all works. I love Messiaen's music, so I very much enjoyed reading this book.
