Nirvana on MTV Unplugged. All of these are influential moments in music history. Without moments like the Sugarhill Gang reaching the Top 40, we never would have had rappers like Kendrick Lamar or the Notorious . Without Madonna performing Like a Virgin on the MTV Awards, we never would have had Britney Spears singing Baby One More Time.

History Highlight: Today in 1993, MTV aired Nirvana's "Unplugged" session for the first time. The album featured an acoustic performance taped at Sony Music Studios in New York City on November 18, 1993. Unlike many artists who appeared on the show, Nirvana filmed its entire performance in a single take with the band's fourteen-song setlist including six cover versions. Also, Today In: 1965 - The Beatles released a terrific two-hit single with "Day Tripper" on one side and "We Can Work It Out" on the other.

That would be the band's MTV Unplugged performance, recorded in November 1993, that would eventually be released on Nov. 1, 1994, in the aftermath of Cobain's death. But the band wasn't exactly keen on replicating what had been done by others before. But the worry was for naught as Nirvana pulled together one of the more memorable live performances in music history with the show. The lineup featured the familiar Cobain, Novoselic and Grohl, bolstered with touring guitarist Pat Smear and cellist Lori Goldston. The show opened with a beautifully reserved version of "About a Girl" from the band's Bleach album.

According to Acclaimed Music, MTV Unplugged in New York is the 316th most ranked record on critics' all-time lists. In 2012, it was placed at number 313 on Rolling Stone's list of "The 500 Greatest Albums of All Time". The magazine also named it the 95th best album of the 1990s. NME placed MTV Unplugged. in New York at number 1 on their list of the "50 Greatest Live Albums". In July 2014, Guitar World ranked MTV Unplugged in New York at number 30 in their "Superunknown: 50 Iconic Albums That Defined 1994" list. "The Official Swiss Charts and Music Community: Awards (Nirvana; 'MTV Unplugged')". "British album certifications – Nirvana – MTV Unplugged in New York". British Phonographic Industry. On November 18, 1993, Nirvana performed a now legendary acoustic set for MTV Unplugged, consisting of lesser-known material and covers. Following the demand for new Nirvana material after Kurt Cobain’s death, Nirvana’s live MTV performance was released in album-form on November 1, 1994. MTV Unplugged in New York Q&A. Recorded At Sony Music Studios (New York).

If In Utero is a suicide note, MTV Unplugged in New York is a message from beyond the grave, a summation of Kurt Cobain's talents and pain so fascinating, it's hard to listen to repeatedly. Is it the choice of material or the spare surroundings that make it so effective? Well, it's certainly a combination of both, how the version of the Vaselines' "Jesus Doesn't Want Me for a Sunbeam" or the three covers of Meat Puppets II songs mean as much as "All Apologies" or "Something in the Wa.
