Vivaldi wrote the piece in the 1730s, a period in which he wrote two of his other works featuring the lute, the trios for violin and lute in G minor and C major. performed on guitar by more classical soloists, such as John Williams. The piece is also sometimes played on mandolin. The concerto is played on the Ontario Parliament Network and is performed by Canadian guitarists Liona Boyd and Norbert Kraft. Vivaldi’s mandolin’s concertos are a good case in point. Whatever the beauties of the early period-instrument interpretations of these works, either in complete collections like the Parley of Instruments (Music for Lute & Mandolin) or part of miscellanous Vivaldi concerto programs like Pinnock's recording of Concerto RV 558 (Vivaldi: Concerti, Alla Rustica), in 1992 Teldec released a recording of the Pretre Rosso’s complete output for mandolin and/or lute by. Il Giardino Armonico, that established new standards of interpretations and made it hard to go back. But a very nice touch – already present in 1969 – is to have the mandolin trill all his notes in the middle Andante. Vivaldi indicates nothing of the sort, but in other versions, when the mandolin just plucks his notes, as they are playing in unissono with the violins, they can hardly be heard.
Mandolin Concerto (Vivaldi). For the lute concerto by Vivaldi, also sometimes played with mandolin soloist, see Lute concerto in D major (Vivaldi). The Mandolin Concerto in C major, RV 425, was written by the Italian composer Antonio Vivaldi in 1725 and is often accompanied by The Four Seasons (1725). The music consists of virtuosic treatment of the solo instrument, the mandolin, and the interplay between the soloist and accompaniment of the orchestra .
