Artie Shaw, the clarinetist, bandleader and composer who created a rich body of American music before he quit playing in his prime and walked away from show business, died Thursday in the Southern California city of Thousand Oaks. The last of the Swing-era giants, Shaw was a dashing figure whose hit recordings of "Begin the Beguine," "Frenesi" and "Star Dust" made him a huge star in the late 1930s and 1940s, and whose marriages to screen sirens Lana Turner and Ava Gardner - two of his eight wives - heightened the celebrity that he could never handle. Artie Shaw, poses for a photo in his Newbury Park home on Aug. 17, 2002. Shaw was last icon of the big-band era. The artist launched into American pop culture with his 1938 hit, "Begin the Beguine," but fled the scene for other intellectual pursuits in 1954. He passed away on Thursday, Jan.

Artie Shaw - One of jazz's finest clarinetists, Artie Shaw never seemed fully satisfied with his musical life, constantly breaking up successful bands and running away from success. While Count Basie and Duke Ellington were satisfied to lead just one orchestra during the swing era, and Benny Goodman (due to illness) had two, Shaw led five, all of them distinctive and memorable

Born in New York City, Artie Shaw would become one of the top bandleaders in the swing era. He began his musical career as a highly sought-after alto saxophone player in the New York area, and was able to benefit from the growth of radio and studio recordings. As he perfected his technical ability with various dance bands, he was still relatively unknown in the early 30's when he began to focus exclusively on the Clarinet while Swing music began to grow in popularity. From the lively swing orchestras inspiring large audiences to dance, to the softer Bossa Nova sound which is pleasing to hear in a relaxed setting, both have contributed to the growth of musical creativity in Jazz from the 1930's through today. Shaw first broke through with an unusual string quartet in New York's Imperial Theater. By early 1937, Shaw had formed a conventional swing band which would eventually record "Begin the Beguine".

Artie Shaw (born Arthur Jacob Arshawsky; May 23, 1910 – December 30, 2004) was an American clarinetist, composer, bandleader, and actor. Also an author, Shaw wrote both fiction and non-fiction. Widely regarded as "one of jazz's finest clarinetists", Shaw led one of the United States' most popular big bands in the late 1930s through the early 1940s. Though he had numerous hit records, he was perhaps best known for his 1938 recording of Cole Porter's "Begin the Beguine".
