Kenneth Lorin Darby (May 13, 1909 – January 24, 1992) was an American composer, vocal arranger, lyricist, and conductor. His film scores were recognized by the awarding of three Academy Awards and one Grammy Award. He provided vocals for the Munchkinland mayor in The Wizard of Oz (1939), who was portrayed in the film by Charlie Becker. Bernard Herrmann, National Philharmonic Orchestra. The Mysterious Film World Of Bernard Herrmann. Alfred Newman, Bernard Herrmann, Franz Waxman, Hugo Friedhofer, Ken Darby. Great Americana Film Scores, The Kentuckian. 1977, Vinyl (LP, Stereo, Quadraphonic).

Bernard Herrmann composed his first complete work for large orchestra, THE FOREST: A TONE POEM, in January of 1929. Five years later in 1934 he wrote his earliest works for radio, IN THE MODERN MANNER, a series of poetry settings, followed in 1937 by a string of experimental compositions for THE COLUMBIA WORKSHOP. To which composer Hugo Friedhofer is said to have responded "The same place the camera came from, Mr. Hitchcock. As Hitchcock's celebrity increased, his public persona seemed at times to achieve star recognition. He was becoming as much a public figure as the actors and actresses who performed in his pictures. Both on and off the screen the relationship between Alfred Hitchcock and Bernard Herrmann was deepening. The composer was being drawn ever closer into the insecure director's ever shrinking world of friends and colleagues.

Bernard Herrmann, Henry Mancini, Alfred Newman, Max Steiner, Miklos Rozsa, Erich Wolfgang Korngold, Dimitri Tiomkin, Franz Waxman, Victor Young, Hugo Friedhofer, Johnny Green, Bronislau Kaper, Alex North, Elmer Bernstein, Jerry Goldsmith, and Ken Darby. This year is something different with a man who was not primarily a film composer but who contributed greatly to film scoring and had considerable influence on film composers.

There is no mention of this album being Quadraphonic on the cover, but it is clearly mentioned on both record labels.

I've received a couple of queries asking whether this is indeed a Quad release, as the cover only states 'Stereo'. However the label of the LP itself says 'SQ / Stereo [SQ = Stereo Quadrophonic]', and also credits Bob Norberg as 'SQ Remix Engineer'. Therefore it does appear to be a Quad LP, whilst not actually advertising the fact!
