This Hyperion 30th Anniversary reissue features three French piano trios: Fauré, Debussy, and Ravel. Even within this seemingly narrow category there is much variability, from the precision and intentionality of Ravel to the impetuous, almost careless youthful Debussy, to the seasoned, mature Fauré D minor Trio. Florestan brings unique tone qualities, rubato, and balance to each of these works.
All three trios are absolute gems of French chamber music and are emmensely enjoyable, especially when played as alluringly by the Florestan Trio. The Florestans play this music with imagination, delicacy and compelling musicianship that keeps the music vibrant and perpetually expressive. They bring out the gorgeous lyricism in the Faure and Debussy Trios with smooth, effortless melodic lines and rich sonorities. The Piano Trio in D minor, Op. 120 of Faure, written in the twilight of his years, offers a surprising glimpse of a composer now soothingly romantic, tuneful and uncomplicated. Shorn are earlier complexities, and in their place the warmth of an autumnal glow, most beautifully illuminated in the rapturous Andantino. No less surprising is the late-teenage G minor Piano Trio, written in 1880, of Claude Debussy, whose fabulous impressionist leanings are still formative.

The Florestan Trio has the ability to adapt its style to different kinds of music without any loss of conviction. After Brahms and Schumann comes this French disc showing it equally adept at entering the 1880 salon world of Debussy's youthful Trio, Ravel's brilliant exotic idiom, and the intimate, intense thoughts of Faure's old age. These works appeared together on a fine 1989 disc by the Fontenay Trio (Teldec, 7/92 - nla). If you have this you're not likely to feel dissatisfied, but the Florestan presents a very different view of all three pieces, and in several respects.
