In 2013, Bowie returned from a decade-long recording hiatus with The Next Day. He remained musically active until he died of liver cancer two days after the release of his final album, Blackstar (2016). Bowie's second album followed in November; originally issued in the UK as David Bowie, it caused some confusion with its predecessor of the same name, and the early US release was instead titled Man of Words/Man of Music; it was reissued internationally in 1972 by RCA Records as Space Oddity. In March 1982, the month before Paul Schrader's film Cat People came out, Bowie's title song, "Cat People (Putting Out Fire)", was released as a single, becoming a minor US hit and entering the UK Top 3.

The lead single from Never Let Me Down wasn't exactly David Bowie at his best, but it did show that even at the height of his commercial profile during the eighties he could tell have at least a little bit of fun with his intended radio hits. That said, the musical arrangement and delivery is among the most anonymous of his career, the combination of heavily echoed drums and synth horns only slightly offset by the buried mock choirs and occasional snips and snarls of guitar feedback . Still, he sounds like he's enjoying himself as he goes, which is more than could be said than much of the album the song came from.
