Woman's Hour was a British indie pop four-piece band based in London, England. The group was formed by siblings Fiona and William Burgess, along with Nicolas Graves and Josh Hunnisett. They played their first show in 2011, and released their debut album Conversations on Secretly Canadian in 2014. In December 2018 the band announced they would be breaking up after the release of their second album Ephyra.
Woman’s Hour have none of it: it’s just singer Fiona Burgess, set to stripped, straightforward, pretty electropop, singing in her unshowy voice about things she knows with agonising directness. If I stop and cease to exist, would it be better for you?’ she asks on opening song ‘Unbroken Sequence’ with such childlike sincerity that one feels impelled to scream ‘No!’ at the top of one’s lungs. This is probably all making ‘Conversations’ sound unutterably square, and the fact is that Woman’s Hour don’t come across as the hippest bunch. But then historically a lot of indie bands haven’t been, and there’s a beautifully drizzly northern melancholy here that recalls The Smiths’s more low-key moments.
The purest expression of Woman's Hour sound is Conversations’ title track, a song that revels in bookish charm and a yearning, endearing performance from lead singer Fiona Burgess. Burgess sings about awkward moments of strange affection, exactly the sort of moments this music could ably soundtrack; the subject matter and sound lends itself well to library-set fantasies, with romantic pairs whispering through stacks of books. There’s a tightness to the band’s ensemble that enables the cultivation of a careful, genuine intimacy

We’ve watched London quartet Woman’s Hour ascend from the buzz of their early songs to landing with label Secret Canadian for the recent single Her Ghost. Like the previous cuts, which show up on the album, Conversations has a romantic mysteriousness as it spills out its intimate grooves like expanding wisps of smoke. Conversations is out 7/14 via Secretly Canadian.

Woman's Hour are not your average band. The first clue comes in the name of the London-based four-piece, taken from a beloved female-focused news and culture show on BBC Radio 4. The second is in their graphic, striking monochrome visuals, meticulously curated in collaboration with TATE and MOMA certified fine artists Oliver Chanarin and Adam Bromberg. These play with shape and texture, much like their powerful, iridescent music.
