But those two strikes hardly matter when the performer hits a home run with every piece. Russian pianist Sviatoslav Richter, through the sheer strength of his virtuosity, sensitivity, intensity, and poetry transforms this disparate collection of Rachmaninov's Études-tableaux, Opp. 33 and 39, and his Preludes, Opp. 23 and 32, into a cogent and compelling artistic statement.

LATE RECORDINGS: The 1960 Sviatoslav Richter was a far more fiery and risk-taking pianist than the mature Richter many of us have grown accustomed to. Tremendously exciting. As a bonus, the Sony box has two CDs of the mature Richter in concert at the 1988 Schleswig-Holstein Festival (previously released), plus some Schubert pieces recorded in concert at the Aldeburgh Festival.
