Lyrics to "Whistle Down The Wind" song by Joan Baez: I grew up here all of my life But I dreamed someday I'd go Where the blue-eyed girls And the red gu. .I can't stay here And I'm scared to leave So kiss me once and then I'll go to hell I might as well be Whistlin' down the wind. The bus is at the corner The clock on the wall Broken down windmill There ain't no wind at all. And I yelled and I cursed If I stay here I'll rust I'm stuck like a shipwreck Out here in the dust

Baez included that song on her 1964 album 5, and the extent to which her voice has changed over the last half-century only underscores the extent to which the times have not. Her voice now sounds graver, more deeply grooved by age, with a slight tremble as she recounts the violence in Charleston and its aftermath.

Whistle Down The Wind, Baez's first studio album since 2008's Day After Tomorrow, embodies the kind of selfless, galvanizing work she mentions. The timely collection is concerned about the lingering negative reverberations from global discord, and the ways this friction trickles down and inflicts personal pain. But in a radical move, Whistle Down The Wind gives people permission to envision and seek out a better world, and beseeches them to "be of good heart" while doing so. That last phrase comes from a Josh Ritter-penned song, also called "Be Of Good Heart. Joan Baez and producer Joe Henry recorded Whistle Down The Wind in just 10 days, alongside a core band of instrumentalists. The resulting music is immediate and lively, with golden acoustic guitars, stately piano and muted percussion augmented by unexpected bursts of color.
Whistle Down The Wind’ is Joan’s first new studio album in a decade, since 2008’s critically acclaimed, Grammy®-nominated ‘Day After Tomorrow’, which was produced by Steve Earle. Its release ignited an extraordinary decade of achievement by Joan, including: the PBS American Masters series premiere of her life story, ‘Joan Baez: How Sweet The Sound’ (2009), which underscored the 50th anniversary of Joan’s debut at the 1959 Newport Folk Festival. Joan Baez remains a musical force of nature of incalculable influence. She marched on the front line of the civil rights movement with Martin Luther King, shined a spotlight on the Free Speech Movement, took to the fields with Cesar Chavez, organized resistance to the Vietnam War, inspired Vaclav Havel in his fight for a Czech Republic, saluted the Dixie Chicks for their courage to protest the Iraq war, and stood with old friend.
