You Gotta Walk It Like You Talk It (Or You'll Lose That Beat) is an eight-track, soundtrack to a low-budget 1970 film that features an embryonic version of Steely Dan: Donald Fagen on keyboards, Walter Becker on bass and guitar, and Denny Dias on guitar and percussion, plus John Discepolo on drums. Donald Fagen overheard Becker playing guitar at a campus café when they were both students at Bard College in Annandale-on-Hudson, New York. In an interview many years later, Fagen said, "I hear this guy practicing, and it sounded very professional and contemporary. It sounded like, you know, like a black person, really. They formed the band Leather Canary, which included fellow student Chevy Chase on drums. At the time, Chase called the group "a bad jazz band. With Steely Dan (1971–1981). Main article: Steely Dan.

Born in Queens, New York, Becker met Fagen while both attended Bard College in the state. Before they formed Steely Dan, they wrote and recorded the soundtrack for Richard Pryor’s 1971 movie, You Gotta Walk It Like You Talk It Or You’ll Lose That Beat. Throughout the ’70s, their output remained steady with an additional five LPs, though they retired from touring in the middle of the decade.

Becker left Bard in 1969, without taking a degree, and joined Fagen in New York with an eye toward getting into the music business. They served as backing musicians for vocal group Jay and the Americans, wrote the soundtrack for Richard Pryor’s 1971 film You Gotta Walk It Like You Talk It or You’ll Lose that Beat, and landed one of their songs, I Mean to Shine, on a Barbra Streisand album. A gig as staff songwriters for ABC Records brought them out to . at the dawn of the Seventies.
