The legend of Stagger Lee is one of the most important and enduring stories from American folklore. It is a tale that originated from African-American oral tradition, and it also has become a very popular story within the white community. There are many different versions of the tale, but here is the general storyline. Stagger Lee (also known as Stagolee, Stack O' Lee, Stackerlee, Stackalee et. gets into a dispute with a man named Billy DeLyon (also known as Billy the Lion or Billy Lyons) after losing his Stetson hat to Billy while gambling.

As Stagger Lee lit a cigarette she shot him in the balls Blew the smoke off her revolver, had him dragged to city hall Bayo, Bayo, see you hang him high He shot my Billy dead and now he's got to die Delia went a walking down on Singapore Street A three-piece band on the corner played "Near My God to. Thee" But Delia whistled a different tune, what tune could it be? The song that woman sung was "Look Out Stagger Lee" The song that Delia sung was "Look Out Stagger Lee".

The historical "Stagger Lee" was Lee Shelton, an African-American pimp living in St. Louis, Missouri in the late 19th century. The Youngbloods released a version of the song on their 1971 album, Good and Dusty. The Grateful Dead recorded a version of the tale which focuses on the fictionalized hours after the death of "Billy DeLyon", when Billy's wife Delia tracks down Stagger Lee in a local saloon and "she shot him in the balls" in revenge for Billy's death.

There are well over sixty known recorded versions, and countless others that were never recorded and Mississippi John Hurt’s 1928 recording is considered the definitive version by blues scholars. Other versions have included Furry Lewis (1927), Long Clive Reed (1927), Frank Hutchison (1927), Woody Guthrie (1956), Lonnie Donegan (1956), Taj Mahal (1969) and Bob Dylan (1993). The Black Keys recorded a song entitled Stack Shot Billy on their 2004 album Rubber Factory. Frank Hutchison was from West Virginia, who played the guitar held on his lap, recorded the song in 1927 for OKeh. He was a white man who learned to play from a black musician neighbour.
