Erotica is the fifth studio album by American recording artist Madonna, released on October 20, 1992 by Maverick and Sire Records. The album was released simultaneously with Madonna's first book publication Sex, a coffee table book containing explicit photographs featuring the singer, and marked her first release under Maverick, her own multimedia entertainment company.
Twenty-five years ago, Madonna changed. The first single and title track, "Erotica," set the tone for her album and the Sex book (a Middle Eastern-flavored version entitled "Erotic" was included on a CD with copies of Sex). But unlike many of the other tracks on Erotica, "Erotica" underwent numerous radical changes during the album sessions. Shep Pettibone: "Erotica" was four different songs throughout the process.
Madonna’s ‘Erotica,’ ‘Sex’: Why Musical Masterpiece, Defiant Book Still Matter. In 1990, Madonna was as astronomically popular as a boundary-bulldozing, unapologetically bacchanalian performance artist could get. Drawing from Harlem drag balls, Vogue went Number One nearly worldwide.
folkscanomy sexuality; folkscanomy; additional collections.
The words "sexy pop star" can be defined in only one word: Madonna. One thing that hasn't changed: her killer body.
Today, Sex is still the most radical career move a pop star has ever made. During Madonna’s imperial phase ― the ephemeral period in an artist’s career when everything turns to commercial gold ― she sang about teenage pregnancy, introduced the famous cone bra, burned Christian crosses, simulated masturbation on an arena tour and made a video so prurient that even the youth-centric MTV refused to air it. That was child’s play
Madonna SEX was probably the most talked-about photobook in 1992. I can still remember the media buzz quite vividly. Madonna teamed up with one of the world’s most successful fashion photographers Steven Meisel to produce a series of photo essays each with a different sexual theme. Madonna was at the peak of her popularity at this time. A number of friends and celebrities joined the photo sessions. Isabella Rossellini, Udo Kier, Vanilla Ice (her then boyfriend), Big Daddy Kane, Naomi Campbell, and male model and artist Tony Ward amongst others. CD Track: Erotica (alternative version to album track) by Madonna 5:19. Produced by Callaway. 8 page comic booklet bound in.
With her Erotica album, Madonna tackles what ‘90s America did not want to face: sexuality, AIDS, female empowerment, relationships, homosexuality. In a word; Life itself. If there isn't a homemade sex tape or provocative photoshoot to accompany an album's release it's deemed too tame. In 1992 a pop star baring their body (and soul) in the way that Madonna did on EROTICA and in her coffee table book, SEX, was unheard of. This was considered a major misstep in her career as the album came out along side SEX and the "Body of Evidence" movie. Madonna was defiant, in your face, and overtly sexual with these projects and many people wrote her off.
