In the Wind is the third album by the American folk music trio Peter, Paul & Mary, released in 1963 (see 1963 in music). In the Wind was so successful that when it hit on the Billboard album charts, it caused their two previous albums to re-enter the Top 10 as well. The album was released in October 1963, a few months before the arrival of the Beatles heralded the British Invasion. At this point in musical history the folk music revival was in full flower. In addition, the song "In the Wind" features in the 1992 film Buffy the Vampire Slayer, the forerunner to the later successful TV series.
The surprise is how truly excellent the original recording and this SACD are. I listened to the original vinyl from the 60's for 30 years, and had no complaints, but both this SACD and the even better (of course) ORG 45-rpm vinyl reissue sound vastly better. Steve Hoffman got the just released "In The Wind" SACD (Audio Fidelity) by Peter Paul and Mary right. Perhaps, the master survived the years well enough that it didn't need much playing around. All the flaws of the original recoding are left in place-and that's a good thing.
They recorded their debut album, Peter, Paul and Mary, in 1962. It included Lemon Tree, 500 Miles and the Pete Seeger hit tunes If I Had a Hammer and Where Have All the Flowers Gone? It remained a main catalog-seller for decades to come, eventually selling over two million copies, earning double platinum certification in the United States alone. As the decade progressed they lent their voices and passion to liberal causes. Following Minnesota Senator Eugene McCarthy’s strong showing in the 1968 New Hampshire Primary, the group recorded Eugene McCarthy For President (If You Love Your Country) endorsing McCarthy, which was released without a record label. Yarrow eventually married the politician’s niece. Stookey wrote the classic There is Love for their wedding ceremony.
