After taking his early urban folk tales of cars and girls as far as he could on Born to Run, Bruce Springsteen took a long, hard look at the lives of those same Jersey street kids a few years down the line, now saddled with adult responsibilities and realizing that the American Dream was increasingly out of their grasp, on 1978's Darkness. on the Edge of Town, an album that dramatically broadened Springsteen's musical range and lyrical scope.
The year before, Springsteen recorded it for an album called The Ties That Bind, which he decided not to release. This and six other tracks from that album were included on The River. A long, intense version was featured on the 1999 E Street Band reunion tour. More songs from Bruce Springsteen. More songs that were adapted from country songs. More songs with bodies of water in the title. The best part about that box set is the harmonica being played on The River. Ryan from Warren Ohio,This album changed my life. Just wanted to say that (not that anyone cares). But this song (along with the whole album) makes you think about who you are and what you've done and makes you look through yourself in the mirror. Thank you Bruce! Joe from Philadelphia, PaThe River is about his sister.
I come from down in the valley Where, mister, when you're young They bring you up to do like your daddy done Me and Mary we met in high school When she was just seventeen We'd ride out of this valley down to where the fields were green. We'd go down to the river And into the river we'd dive Oh, down to the river we'd ride. Then I got Mary pregnant And man, that was all she wrote And for my nineteenth birthday I got a union card and a wedding coat We went down to the courthouse And the.

Indeed, The River is Springsteen’s New Wave album, but it’s also his pop album (it was his first Billboard 200 chart-topper) and the beginning of his forays into the harrowing acoustic balladry he’d explore with his 1982 follow-up, Nebraska. The sheer expanse of The River gives Bruce ample room to be goofy, sentimental, hopeful, and despondent in equal measure. He always meant for his music to fuel dance parties and inspire spiritual epiphanies, and here, he casts darkness and light in stark relief
Bruce Springsteen's 'The River' was released on Oct. 17, 1980. That’s exactly what he got. More than any other Bruce Springsteen album, you hear the E Street Band living up to their onstage reputation, providing some blistering rock on the uptempo numbers - particularly the four that open the record - and giving room for the slower and darker songs to breathe, most notably Point Blank, Stolen Car and Drive All Night. A lot of this was the work of Steven Van Zandt, who served as co-producer. But the decision to turn the band loose in the studio didn’t mean that everything ran smoothly.
