Art Blakey was a hoot, totally disarming. Billy Higgins was great, Max Roach & Art Taylor were down to earth. Louis Bellson treated me like his long lost nephew. Anyway, I shook his hand right after he finished and that was that. Then I got in line to wait for him, and was going to say something lame like "great show!". But a Bass player friend of mine had borrowed that album a while back and surprised me by bringing it to the show. It's a trio setting with Hank Jones plays piano and Art Davis on bass. A very nice solo, and he really juggles rhythms at the end. Years back at a show in Cambridge, MA, Elvin signed my copy of this album.

Philly Joe Jones was one of the most important and influential jazz drummers. He is mainly known for his playing in the Miles Davis Quintet, but he performed and recorded with many of the greatest names in jazz, and greatly influenced all jazz drummers who followed him. Philly Joe was born with the name Joseph Rudolph Jones in Philadelphia. His teachers were Charlie Wilcoxin and Cozy Cole, and he gained helpful advice from Art Blakey and Max Roach
