Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan is a 1982 American science fiction film directed by Nicholas Meyer and based on the television series Star Trek. It is the second film in the Star Trek film series, and is a sequel to Star Trek: The Motion Picture (1979).

A surprisingly dark, emotional effort some distance removed from Goldsmith's utopian fanfare, Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan was instrumental in steering the franchise into more complex territory. Horner's lucid melodies and sweeping orchestral arrangements possess a sense of genuine danger and malice long absent from Star Trek's musical backdrop, climaxing in the profoundly emotional catharsis of "Spock.

It’s a fantastic soundtrack in which Horner first showcased the musical style and motifs that have characterized his extraordinarily lucrative career. The young composer jumped at the challenge and delivered a career-making score, treating outer space in the same way as he would a high-energy nautical adventure. Is there any way to differentiate the black vinyl variant from the Mutara nebula-coloured variant of this album from the outside packaging? My local record store has a few sealed copies, and as far as I can find, the two variants have the same barcode, item number, etc. on the packaging...
  • Grarana
Hi, did you ever find out how to tell the difference? I can’t seem to find any information on it. Thanks
  • Felhann
surface noise on my copy is brutal, anyone else? at least the warping isn't as bad as usual.
  • Shistus
I will note, for what it's worth, there are some very quiet strings in some of the pieces that sound almost exactly like surface noise. Just sayin...
  • Llathidan
My copy doesn't have bad surface noise just typical colored vinyl surface noise. Audio quality seems really good though I think.
  • Thozius
Slight background noise on mine but nothing too distracting, pretty silent on some parts too so it's ok : )

I'll never understand people trying to sell a record for $90-$100 when it's still available for $35 directly from the label. This is a fantastic release. Not only does it feature 30 minutes of music not available on the original soundtrack album, but the vinyl is stunningly beautiful. I was a bit worried that it might not look as good in person (as is sometimes the case with swirl or splatter vinyl), but it looks amazing. And I love that it is not just color swirl for its own sake. It is a wonderful representation of the Mutara Nebula, which plays such a significant role in the film. And of course, the most important thing, audio fidelity is up to Mondo's usual standard. This release both looks and sounds fantastic, and is destined to become a collector's item among both Trek fans and film score aficionados. But seriously...don't pay collector's item prices. Get it from Mondo for $35 while you still can.

Maybe in the US. Because in Austria (don't know in other European countries) the price is 50€ in an ordinary shop! But all Mondo (re)releases like Back to the Future, Black Swan etc. cost the same price and Gremlins i have seen recently (Jan 17) for 70€..!

This is one of the most beautiful albums I've purchased. Stunning artwork and gorgeous colored vinyl.

Great to see this magnificent Horner soundtrack getting a worthy re-release with added content and great original artwork. Although described by Mondo as a limited release, rumours are that there were quite a high number pressed and so maybe not that 'limited' after all.
