Most of Jim O’Rourke’s music is not made for you or me. Some of it is: the Wilco and Sonic Youth records he’s played on or produced were certainly meant to have an audience. His collaborative output-scores of releases, many improvised, alongside players like Oren Ambarchi, Keiji Haino, Fennesz-is part of a greater conversation encompassing both players and listeners. Its gentleness is reminiscent of Kevin Drumm’s 2009 album Imperial Horizon, but O’Rourke’s materials are less muted, more clear-cut. It’s hard to say how he made it, but it feels like all the notes in a major scale are fading softly (and perhaps randomly) in and out of earshot, overlapping in such a way that creates a perpetually shifting moiré of cottony harmonies.
American post-classical composer Jim O'Rourke has been a key component in the increasing overlap of the American andEuropean experimentalmusic avant-garde, working in everything from jazz and rock to ambient and electro-acoustic andbuilding many a bridge in between. A Chicagonative, his work has found equal luck with experimental jazz and noise fanatics, chill room denizens, and bedroom experimentalists, and has hadthe resultant effect of cross-pollinating many otherwise l communities.
Jim O'Rourke (born January 18, 1969) is an American musician and record producer. He was long associated with the Chicago experimental and improv scene. Around 2000, he relocated to New York before moving on to Tokyo, Japan, where he currently resides. O’Rourke is best known for his numerous solo and collaborative projects, many of which are entirely instrumental, and for his tenure as a member of Sonic Youth from 1999 to 2005.
