Over four years in the making, 'Kindly Bent to Free Us' is a new apex in the evolution of progressive rock visionaries CYNIC. The album's eight tracks are rich, vibrant, and evocative, and the mark of a band that are masters of their craft. As "True Hallucination Speak", "The Lion's Roar", and the title track personify, CYNIC 2014 is transcendent. Without a doubt, 'Kindly Bent to Free Us' is CYNIC's tour de force and yet another crescendo in the band's illustrious, ground-breaking career. released February 18, 2014.
Did Cynic really have to make a third album? In 2006, the Florida progressive metal paragons returned to the stage after a decade away from both recording and performing (plus a short stint under another name). The first phase of Cynic’s existence had been short but crucial; in only five years, they evolved from an atavistic thrash band to a frame-breaking alloy of technical death metal and thundering jazz fusion, crystallized on their wonderfully vexing 1993 debut, Focus. It was also a chance for graceful closure. Instead, Cynic have made Kindly Bent to Free Us, a debacle that scraps not only that exit opportunity but also a chunk of what made them interesting at all. As if to prevent the perception that they, after a quarter century, simply became just another band aiming to issue a new record every several years, Cynic drastically shift their approach for Kindly Bent to Free Us.
Endlessly Bountiful Lyrics. About Kindly Bent to Free Us. Kindly Bent to Free Us is the third studio album by the progressive metal band Cynic. In 2012, during the writing process of the album, Paul Masdival told irish magazine Molten: It’s almost like, I don’t know how to explain it, but if I had to put it in a box it’s more sci-fi, futuristic and alien but at the same time very song-driven. It’s kind of like, to me, coming into CYNIC’s body more

Complete your Cynic collection. This bronze pressing sounds awesome! They def. Took a totally different approach on this album but it works flawlessly. Kind of knew where they were going after hearing Carbon Based Anatomy which is it's own little masterpiece. Can't wait to see where they go from here.
For being six years in the works, Kindly Bent To Free Us sounds exclusively written from an arbitrarily chosen Cynic jam session. It just feels too organic for a band that has always strived to make space-oriented music. Until now they’d always succeeded at that goal- otherworldly anthems like King Of Those Who Know encapsulate everything at which Cynic is best, and just from the first few seconds. Instead, this record hands the listener vocoder and overly-textured guitar tones- it’s overkill for music that instead should be offering solid riffs. And the most concerning quality of the album is that Cynic loves it all the same- it’s the music they wanted to give to the world. If this is the music that makes Cynic happy, then I haven’t a damned clue what’s in it for us Cynic fans, because this release is the definition of insubstantial.
