William Topley is a British musician. Topley was the lead singer of the band The Blessing in the early 1990s, releasing two albums before breaking up. Topley was signed as a solo artist by Mercury Nashville after Luke Lewis, who had worked at The Blessing's label MCA, became president of Mercury. Barry Beckett produced Topley's debut album, which appeared in 1997. Topley continued recording through the 2000s. Topley is still touring as of 2015 and has announced performance dates in 2016. It was William Topley's first album with his group, The Blessing, that propelled him into fame in 1991. A global tour followed along with TV coverage in Paris and videos in Jamaica. Jimmy Miller, iconic producer for the Stones, developed The Blessing's sophomore effort, Locusts And Wild Honey, and declared, "They're right up my alley. I haven't had such a good relationship with a band since Traffic. Topley's next natural move was to go solo. The leader of the Blessing for two early-'90s albums, Topley earned several fans in the American music industry, including MCA executive Luke Lewis. After Lewis became the president of Mercury Nashville, he signed Topley to a recording contract. Another admirer, longtime Muscle Shoals keyboard session man and producer Barry Beckett, was hired to oversee recording in Nashville for Topley's debut album, Black River, released in early 1997.

The album was dedicated to Mark and his wife "for their support which was nothing short of a Miracle in a time of Dire Straits. The album ends with the ballad "Storybook Love", the theme from The Princess Bride movie. Land of Dreams (1988) by Randy Newman. Knopfler produced 7 of the album's 12 tracks. The album includes the single "It's Money that Matters", which unabashedly revisits the Dire Straits song "Money for Nothing". The Notting Hillbillies. Following the incredible success of the Dire Straits’ Brothers In Arms album and tour, Mark Knopfler was looking for a change of pace. Mark formed the country outfit The Notting Hillbillies with old friends Steve Phillips, Brendan Croker and Guy Fletcher. In that month Channel 4’s Rock Steady programme in the UK aired the Hillbillies gig at The Maltings at Snape, and the band were musical guests in the USA on NBC’s Saturday Night Live, where they performed ‘Railroad Worksong’ and ‘I Think I Love You Too Much’. They also provided the track ‘Blues Stay Away from Me’ on the 1998 Paul Newman/Susan Sarandon film soundtrack, Twilight. Your Own Sweet Way’ also appeared on the 1994 compilation album Harvest.
