Heavy Weather is the eighth album by Weather Report, released in 1977 through Columbia Records. The release originally sold about 500,000 copies; it would prove to be the band's most commercially successful album.
Heavy Weather is Weather Report's seventh album, released in 1977 through Columbia Records. It is the band's second album with bassist Jaco Pastorius. On Black Market, Pastorius played on two of the seven tracks, but here he is a full member of the band. Featuring the jazz standard "Birdland", the album is one of the best-sellers in the Columbia jazz catalog. Heavy Weather is considered a landmark album in the jazz-rock or fusion movement of the 1970s. Однако ты также можешь выбрать другой язык. A new version of Last.

Weather report's seventh album Heavy Weather was released in 1977. It is the band's second album with bassist Jaco Pastorius, but on this one he is apermanent member of the band (He was also present on 2 tracks of Black Market MOVLP428). Its opening track, "Birdland", was a significant commercial success, something not typical of instrumental music. A striking feature of "Birdland" is Pastorius picking harmonics on his fretless bass
Weather Report's biggest-selling album is that ideal thing, a popular and artistic success - and for the same reasons. For one thing, Joe Zawinul revealed an unexpectedly potent commercial streak for the first time since his Cannonball Adderley days, contributing what has become a perennial hit, "Birdland. Released just as the jazz-rock movement began to run out of steam, this landmark album proved that there was plenty of creative life left in the idiom.
Weather Report- Heavy Weather. In the late 1970’s throughout the 80’s, Jaco Pastorius solely changed the way we viewed the modern electric bass. This record, being his very first appearance with the fusion icons, Weather Report, is no different than his other albums. However, keep in mind that I am not a humongous Jaco fan boy, and find his tone and personality to be somewhat agitating and some music to be rather dull and lifeless. But the talent can’t be denied. The album kicks off with a remarkable track by the name of Birdland. This song features some wonderful, bluesy keyboards as well as smooth soprano and tenor sax performances. The drums are simple, yet awesome and the bass just seems to be making some wonderful little licks that fit in perfectly with Joe’s keys.
No other Weather Report album received as many awards as Heavy Weather. It was recognized as jazz album of the year by virtually every publication that gave out such an award. It destroyed the competition in Down Beat‘s annual reader’s poll, topping Herbie Hancock’s runner-up album . Heavy Weather was also Weather Report’s best selling record. It reached number 30 on the Billboard pop chart, quickly sold nearly half a million copies, and has subsequently gone gold (signifying sales of 500,000 copies). In his January 2001 Down Beat retrospective on the band, Josef Woodard said, In 2000, Heavy Weather still sounds like a milestone in the cultural unconscious of jazz history.
