Heinrich Schütz's musical representations of the crucifixion of Jesus are milestones of German music before Bach, but they're much less well known than Bach's Passion settings. As conductor Paul Hillier has pointed out in connection with these Danish releases, they're something of a hard sell - especially the extremely spare, unaccompanied, and chant-like Johannes-Passion, written late in Schütz's life.

Heinrich Schütz (German: ; 18 October 1585 – 6 November 1672) was a German composer and organist, generally regarded as the most important German composer before Johann Sebastian Bach, as well as one of the most important composers of the 17th century.
