Imagine the scene at the 76 Club, Burton-on-Trent on Friday, September 24, 1976. The preceding week had seen the British tabloid press engage in its first Sex Pistols fuelled frenzy. Only days earlier (September 20), McLaren’s ‘Punk Rock Festival’ at Club 100 had ended in violence. A glass thrown into the audience, allegedly by Sid Vicious, had shattered, blinding a young fan. Sex Pistols is a box set anthology of the career of the punk band The Sex Pistols with singer Johnny Rotten. It was released on 3 June 2002. The set comprises three themed CDs and an 80-page booklet. At last, the final statement on the Sex Pistols' Burton-on-Trent gig from 1976. This release surpasses both prior releases - The Original Pistols Live and The Best of & the Rest of the Original Pistols - in terms of completeness and even unearths the "lost" track "Satellite. This CD catches the early version of the group during a raw epiphany, which seems to be more appropriate to the punk ethos than the overly polished yet brilliant Never Mind the Bollocks. The first concert in the collection is the June 4 show at the Lesser Free Trade Hall in Manchester that has attained legendary status because of how it singlehandedly birthed the punk scene in Manchester. The final disc is the Sept. 25 date at the 76 Club in Burton-on-Trent that has been circulating as a bootleg. All four concerts were professionally mastered at Abbey Road Studios in London and feature the original lineup of Johnny Rotten (vocals), Steve Jones (guitar), Glen Matlock (bass) and Paul Cook (drums).
