Iain MacKintosh was born on 20 July 1932. His father was from the Outer Hebrides, a watchmaker and goldsmith who owned a pawnshop in Glasgow, his mother came from Northern Ireland. At the age of seven he started learning the Highland pipes and played in a pipe band in his youth. His mother died when he was twelve, and he and his three sisters were brought up by his grandmother. In 1960, at the age of 28, he formed his first band The Islanders, with whom he made one album before leaving. It contained one of the first songs he wrote; the Pawn Song drew on his experiences in the business.

40 years of Iain MacKintosh. As in life, this contrast had its effect on stage when Iain and Hamish started performing as a duo. Unlike Hamish, Iain has never been a focal point for the folk scene. In 1967 he guested on Hamish Imlach's Ballads of Booze, beginning a long creative collaboration that continued off and on for close to three decades. In 1970 Mackintosh closed the family watch business to devote himself to music full-time. After touring Germany and the . in 1974 he released his first solo album, By Request, and four years later teamed with Imlach for A Man's a Man. Mackintosh enjoyed his greatest commercial success while signed to the Greentrax label, an association launched with his 1988 masterpiece, Gentle Persuasion.
