This Hopcyn unfortuntately backed the Lancastrians in the War of the Roses, and lost his possessions to the Vaughans in 1461. The manuscript then entered the library of Roger Vaughan, then passing to his son Thomas at the court at Hergest. At some point, the manuscript found its way into the hands of Thomas Wilkins (1625/6-1699), and was later presented in 1701 to Jesus College, Oxford, by his son, Rev. Thomas Wilkins, of Llanbleithain, Glamorgan in Wales.
Brut y Tywysogion has survived as several Welsh translations of an original Latin version, which has not itself survived. The most important versions are the one in Robert Vaughan's Peniarth MS. 20 and the slightly less complete one in the Red Book of Hergest. The version entitled Brenhinoedd y Saeson (Kings of the English) combines material from the Welsh annals with material from an English source. The Peniarth MS. 20 version begins in 682 with a record of the death of Cadwaladr and ends in 1332. Ian R. Jack, Medieval Wales (Ithaca: Cornell University Press, 1972). Thomas Jones, ed.
