Bringing together music from Rimsky-Korsakov's six best-known operas (plus the less familiar Christmas Eve, which offers some of the most beguiling writing of all) reinforces the impression that because of the composer's unique feeling for colour, his orchestral music can stand more effectively away from the voices than that from any other operatic source. Rimsky-Korsakov: Suites/Järvi. At the time, much of this music was also difficult to find (particularly the suites from Christmas Eve and The Invisible City of Kitezh), and so were additionally welcome in such glittering interpretations.
Rimsky-Korsakov called The Invisible City of Kitezh his finest operatic work and, together with the Golden Cockerel, the suites drawn from these two works bring this Chandos set to a compelling finish. While not for everyone, these recordings, with good overall sound and thorough liner notes, make for an excellent stepping-stone for anyone wishing to acquaint themselves with the 15 operas of Rimsky-Korsakov.
