Prather had attended Washington College, now Washington and Lee University, whose president, Robert E. Lee, would frequently tell his students, "the eyes of the South are upon yo. Prather was known for including in his speeches a similar admonition, "The eyes of Texas are upon you," meaning that the state of Texas was watching and expecting the students to go out and do great things. Prather enjoyed the song and promoted its usage. He died not long thereafter, and the song was played at his funeral. Highway rest stops through the state feature road signs stating that "The Eyes of Texas are upon You!" These signs feature a silhouette of a Texas Ranger, encouraging motorists to call 9-1-1 to report criminal activity. The Eyes of Texas is also the alma mater of the University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP).

I have spent the best part of the last year catching up with the publications from Walt Brown. Having read four volumes and the many appendices of his 'Master Chronology' series, I feel that his 'The Guns of Texas Are Upon You', from 2005, can be considered up with the best of his work. Brown, the history P. and history lecturer, really enters into his domain with this book. It is a most entertaining gallop through the American body politic.
Washington and Lee Swing is the official fight song of Washington & Lee University. Before it morphed into a swing, Dixieland and bluegrass standard, "The Washington and Lee Swing" was one of the most well known - and widely borrowed - football marches ever written, according to Robert Lissauer's Encyclopedia of Popular Music in America. Schools and colleges from Tulane to Slippery Rock to Gonzaga to Iowa State copied it (sometimes with attribution). The Swing" was a trademark of the New Orleans showman Pete Fountain. The trumpeter Red Nichols played it (and Danny Kaye pretended to play it) in the 1959 movie The Five Pennies. There is an audio excerpt from a 1944 recording by Jan Garber, a prominent dance-band leader of the era. School song from D & D's Music Hall.
