Franks Wild Years is the ninth studio album by Tom Waits, released 1987 on Island Records. Subtitled "Un Operachi Romantico in Two Acts", the album contains songs written by Waits and collaborators (mainly his wife, Kathleen Brennan) for a play of the same name.

Tom Waits wrote a song called "Frank's Wild Years" for his 1983 Swordfishtrombones album, then used the title (minus its apostrophe) for a musical play he wrote with his wife, Kathleen Brennan, and toured with in 1986. The Franks Wild Years album, drawn from the show, is subtitled, "un operachi romantico in two acts," though the songs themselves do not carry the plot.

Frank’s Wild Years is the end of a thematic and stylistic trilogy of albums by Tom Waits. Swordfishtrombones is the first album (the albums title comes from a song on that), the second is the classic Rain Dogs. All three albums have experimental styles and free flowing lyrics about homeless people in cities. Subtitled Un Operachi Romantico in Two Acts, the album is an adaptation of a stage play Waits wrote and preformed in. It tells the story of a drifter named Frank as he slowly looses grip on reality and dies. Franks Wild Years Q&A.

His new approach to songwriting was immensely innovative, and strengthened the atmosphere of his world of underdogs and castaways. Swordfishtrombones introduced the new style, Rain Dogs brought it to perfection. Where does this leave Franks Wild Years"

As Tom Waits albums go, Franks Wild Years is a weird one - and this is Tom Waits we’re talking about. Subtitled un operachi romantico in two acts", Franks Wild Years, the musical play written with his wife Kathleen Brennan, only survives as a cast of 15 tunes (two repeated in differing arrangements) that advance no plot beyond Waits’ expected dispersion of unlucky hustlers and lost-in-time dreamers who seem to have emerged from a circus or carnival with nothing left but their.
