From Where I Started’s title is both revelatory and a bit on the nose. Cahoone’s musical career began behind a drum kit, playing in Colorado dive bars and honky tonks in her early teens and, after relocating to the Pacific Northwest when she turned 21, eventually joining famed indie-rock bands Carissa’s Wierd and Band of Horses. Upon picking up the guitar and moving to the front of the stage, Cahoone put out her first solo record in 2006 and then signed with Sub Pop to release 2008’s Only as the Day is Long and 2012’s Deer Creek Canyon. These characteristics not only carry over to From Where I Started, but the first lines of album-opening track Always Turn Around directly address Cahoone’s musical maturation as well: First years I ever played my/my songs for anyone/my back was toward them and I sang down to the ground.

Sera Cahoone’s self-titled debut album tells the quiet story of simple truths – heartbreak, longing, and self-discovery. The ten songs feature a wide array of sounds including pedal steel, banjo, dobro, violin, and harmonica, and was recorded with the help of band members past and present - Jay Kardong, Jeff Fielder, Eric Himes, and both Sarah Standard and ‪Mat Brooke from Sera’s old band - Carissa’s Weird. NPR's first listen premieres the full album stream of from where I started. Cahoone has lost none of her easygoing approachability along the way; her songs still amble sweetly and gently, propelled by a voice that radiates kindness.

From Where I Started represents a refocusing for Sera Cahoone. It positions her as a songwriter beholden to the old country sounds she grew up with, a songwriter who's always been able to deftly translate a personal perspective into a universal view. It's an album about falling in and out of love, finding new hope, and learning that the best way to move forward is to remember where you began. TRACKLIST 01. Always Turn Around 03:07 02.

Although her last three albums were on Sub Pop Records spending years at the top of the indie charts, Sera Cahoone always had a streak of Americana that runs through her music. She's returning now to these influences with her new album, From Where I Started, which is driven by a strong rhythmic sensibility, owed to her background as a drummer for indie bands. Playing on the rougher, darker edges of the traditional love song, the tracks deal with love and loss. But Cahoone also knows how to surround loss with hope, to temper a sad song. Sera Cahoone has a very non-traditional trajectory, even for a folksinger. Cahoone has been performing in country bands since the tender age of 12, when she would play the drums in dive bars in Colorado After growing up in Colorado, Cahoone moved to Seattle in her early twenties and got involved with the thriving music scene there, first as a drummer for local Carissa’s Wierd (yes, that’s how they spell it)., and then later playing drums with one of the city’s breakout folk-rock bands, Band Of Horses  . In the last five years, Cahoone has been relatively quiet, but she’s returned this year with another independent release, From Where I Started that will be out next Friday, 3/24.

first two songs on a-side are so noisy (g) it makes ya want to yank the damn thing off the table - but i stick it out every time just to get past the horrendous noise and am rewarded with a much quieter listening experience rest of the way thru (a6 invites a loud pop in as a reminder of what you went thru at the start). b-side fairs much lower on the surface noise (vg+). you'd be hard pressed not saying this is a bad pressing. love her music and this is a very nice addition to her burgeoning oeuvre. packaging is of notable quality just wish my vinyl sounded better - much better
