Lawrence began performing during the depression in the 1930s, and had made his way to performing on the radio by 1943. He became popular doing comic impressions, and by the early 1950's he performed in lesser-known clubs and did bit parts on live television shows. He also performed in Broadway productions and shows during this time. In September 1956, a single entitled "The Old Philosopher" rose to the Billboard Top 40 chart, a rare distinction for a comedy record by a little-known performer. It turned out to be a one-hit wonder for Eddie Lawrence, but nonetheless paved the way.

Eddie Lawrence (born Lawrence Eisler; March 2, 1919 – March 25, 2014) was an American monologist, actor, singer, lyricist, playwright, artist, director and television personality, whose unique comic creation, the eternally optimistic Old Philosopher, gained him a devoted cult following for over five decades. Listen to the biggest hits from Eddie "The Old Philosopher" Lawrence, including The Old Philosopher, Merry Old Philosopher No. 3, Merry Old Philosopher No. 1, and more on Slacker Radio. A veteran of the Borscht Belt circuit, Lawrence quickly found his niche with his character the Old Philosopher, scoring several comedy hits and making "Is that what's bothering you, bunkie?" a catchphrase of the '50s. Adept at multiple voices, his non-philosopher sketches find him doing dialogs with himself, no small achievement. Born Lawrence Eisler in Brooklyn, New York, he began performing at the end of the Depression 1930s
