The Rocky Mountains, also known as the Rockies, are a major mountain range in western North America. The Rocky Mountains stretch more than 4,800 kilometers (3,000 mi) from the northernmost part of British Columbia, in western Canada, to New Mexico in the Southwestern United States. Located within the North American Cordillera, the Rockies are somewhat distinct from the Pacific Coast Ranges, Cascade Range, and the Sierra Nevada, which all lie farther to the west.

The Rocky Mountains are commonly defined to stretch from the Liard River in British Columbia, down to the Rio Grande in New Mexico. They can also be described as running from Alaska to Mexico, but usually those mountains are considered to be part of the entire American cordillera, rather than part of the Rockies. President Harrison established several forest reserves in the Rocky Mountains in 1891-1892. In 1905, President Theodore Roosevelt extended the Medicine Bow Forest Reserve to include the area now managed as Rocky Mountain National Park. Economic development began to center on mining, forestry, agriculture, and recreation, as well as on the service industries that support them.

The Rocky Mountains are part of the longest mountain range in the world. They run down the western part of North America, from Alaska to Mexico and continue as the Andes Mountains in South America. The Rocky Mountains are almost 5,000 km long and, in the central part of the USA, almost 500 km wide. The mountains are made up of many separate ranges. The highest peak is M. lbert, which reaches 4,400 metres. In between the ranges are valleys and large basins. The first European settlers arrived in the south-western parts of the mountains in the 16th century. Trappers, hunters and traders explored the region throughout the early period. For hundreds of years Europeans and Native Americans fought over land.

The Rocky mountains are located in the western part of North America. Also known as the Rockies, the mountain range is a popular tourist attraction. The Rockies or the Rocky mountains are the largest mountain ranges in North America. They are situated in the west of North America and Canada. The ranges are not continuous, but, are segregated. The formation of mountains in the world began in Paleozoic era (300-250 million years ago). The ancient Rockies were formed in this era. Followed by it was the Mesozoic era or the age of dinosaurs (249-200 million years ago). Tectonics and sedimentation took place in North America in the mesozoic era.
