The Velvet Underground was an American rock band formed in 1964 in New York City by singer/guitarist Lou Reed, t John Cale, guitarist Sterling Morrison, and drummer Angus MacLise (replaced by Moe Tucker in 1965). The band was initially active between 1965 and 1973, and was briefly managed by the pop artist Andy Warhol, serving as the house band at the Factory and Warhol's Exploding Plastic Inevitable events from 1966 to 1967.
The Velvet Underground (album). The Velvet Underground is the self-titled third studio album by American rock band the Velvet Underground. Released in March 1969, it was their first record with Doug Yule, who was a replacement for John Cale. Recorded in 1968 at TTG Studios in Hollywood, California, the album's sound-consisting largely of ballads and straightforward rock songs-marked a notable shift in style from the band's previous recordings.

On Lou Reed, even the cover conjured the feel of the eponymous paperback that spawned the Velvet Underground. With a tidal wave about to envelop a Manhattan block, hummingbirds drink the nectar of Lou’s name writ large in spiky roses, atop an open Faberge egg - symbolic of the Velvets - with a dejected duckling staring at the pavement, resigned to the grim fate of the city. Luckily for Lou, ducks can swim. After the album was finished, Lou decided to take another look back, though. John Cale and Nico were scheduled to appear at Le Bataclan, a Parisian discotheque in the Eleventh Arrondissement, named for the Offenbach operetta set in China, an influence carried over to the variegated geometric structure with dormer windows and a pagoda roof.
It features material from the Velvet Underground's first album, The Velvet Underground & Nico, and Reed's 1972 solo debut album Lou Reed. The version of "Berlin" is from that debut album. American Poet was released in 2001. It had previously been released as a bootleg recording. For individual discographies, see articles for Lou Reed and John Cale, and main entries on Maureen Tucker and Doug Yule. The discography of the American rock band The Velvet Underground consists of five studio albums, five live albums, thirteen compilation albums, two box sets and seven singles. The first line-up was formed in New York City consisting of Lou Reed on vocals and guitar, John Cale on several instruments (viola, keyboards and bass), Sterling Morrison on guitar and bass and Angus MacLise on percussion (replaced by Maureen Tucker in November 1965).
Upon first release, the Velvet Underground's self-titled third album must have surprised their fans nearly as much as their first two albums shocked the few mainstream music fans who heard them. The album's relative calm has often been attributed to the departure of the band's most committed avant-gardist, John Cale, in the fall of 1968; the arrival of new bassist Doug Yule; and the theft of the band's amplifiers shortly before they began recording. But Lou Reed's lyrical exploration of the demimonde is as keen here as on any album he ever made, while displaying a warmth and compassion he sometimes denied his characters.
Loaded is likely The Velvet Underground’s most popular album – Sweet Jane and Rock & Roll have gone on to be rock radio staples. Critically, it’s recieved the same acclaim that their other three records have – universal praise. The album was widely influential – Graham Coxon claims it to be a huge influence on Blur and Phish covered the entire thing in concert on Halloween, 1998.
First with the Velvet Underground, and then as a solo artist, he made music ranging from the wildly experimental to the perfectly straightforward. But Reed was a storyteller above all, waxing poetic about the full, frightening spectrum of human emotions years before others would dare. With their trans heroines, drug narratives, love stories, elegies, guitar jams and drone-scapes, he made LPs that could be flawed. But they always showed a mind two moves ahead.
