The Cure first began releasing music in the late 1970's with their debut album Three Imaginary Boys; this, along with several early singles, placed the band as part of the post-punk and new wave movements that had sprung up in the wake of the punk rock revolution in the United Kingdom. During the early 1980's, the band's increasingly dark and tormented music was a staple of the emerging gothic rock genre. It was produced by Eric Eisner and Mark Burg. Set in a small town of Stillwater, Minnesota, Erik (Brad Renfro) is an adolescent loner with an emotionally abusive and neglectful and selfish workaholic mother, Gail (Diana Scarwid) who hardly spends time with him.

The Cure was co-produced by Cure frontman Robert Smith and Ross Robinson, who has previously worked with bands such as Korn, Vanilla Ice, Limp Bizkit, Slipknot, At the Drive-In, Glassjaw and The Blood Brothers. This may explain why the songs on the album are significantly heavier than previous material by the band. Robert Smith has described the record as "Cure heavy", as opposed to " new-metal heavy". According to the liner notes, the entire album was recorded live in the studio . Initial pressings included a bonus DVD containing a documentary of the conception of three songs from the album, titled Making The Cure.
People had remembered The Cure as something great. Then I met (producer) Ross (Robinson) and everything changed. Since the beginning he insisted we must do another Cure album, we must do an album together. And it happened that eighteen months later, after calling to me constantly by telephone and writing piles of letters to me, he came to see me again. When four years ago we (released) Bloodflowers, I was convinced that The Cure had reached its end. It was an epitaph. The person who convinced me (to release another album) was (producer) Ross Robinson. There was a time he insisted that I should make another album because a whole generation was waiting for it from us.
