The Bar-Kays were originally formed in 1966 as a sextet and their biggest hit was 'Soul Finger'. They looked like they had a healthy career in front of them as a session band & recording outfit before the backbone of the group was killed, along with Otis Redding, in a horrific plane crash. Only Ben Cauley survived the crash and went on to form what could be dubbed Bar-Kays Mark II. James Alexander (Bass) was also one of the original members but was not aboard the plane because of limited seats on Redding's plane.

The phrase "A hard day's night" was used by John Lennon in his book "In His Own Write" in the short story "Sad Michael". Another origin of the phrase was Ringo Starr who said it after a long working day which went on to the night. Starr said in an interview in 1964, "I came up still thinking it was day I suppose, and I said, 'It's been a hard day-' and I looked around and saw it was dark so I said, 'Night!' So we came to 'A Hard Day's Night'. This song was on top of charts for two weeks and made a record because no performer had ever had the top position on both the album and singles charts in the UK and the USA simultaneously. The very first episode of Beatles cartoon showed on ABC in 1965-1969 was called "A Hard Day's Night". The monsters and ghouls liked the music and danced along.

Nevertheless, that decision still impresses, not only because the album is so strong, but because it was written and recorded at a time when the Beatles were constantly touring, giving regular BBC concerts, appearing on television and releasing non-LP singles and EPs, as well as filming their first motion picture. In that context, the achievement of A Hard Day's Night is all the more astounding. Not only was the record the de facto soundtrack for their movie, not only was it filled with nothing but Lennon-McCartney originals, but it found the Beatles truly coming into their own as a band.
