The Spoils is a debut full-length studio album by Nika Roza Danilova, better known as Zola Jesus, released in July 2010 on Sacred Bones Records. To the LP version's original 10 tracks the CD (15 tracks) adds five songs: two from "Soeur Sewer" and three from the "Poor Sons" 7-inch singles. The album, according to the sleeve note was "recorded in the womb of a Wisconsin winter, 2008/2009". Nika Rosa made it in her apartment and lo-fi standard of the sound had been criticized even by her parents.

Stridulum II by Zola Jesus was one of our favourite records of last year – a slice of cinematic, gothic-inspired pop with tunes as big as the arrangements. You can listen to the follow-up, Conatus, using the SoundCloud player below, and read Nika's track-by-track guide to the albu. words. There was a period in making this album where I thought it would be all instrumental, and I was obsessively churning out songs such as this one. It was so exciting to explore these soundscapes that felt like a score to all the bizarre dreams I was having.

I Can’t Stand, 04:10. Manifest Destiny, 03:16.

Her voice was the focus of every song on the album, even when it was so ground into the mix. Such a powerful, dramatic instrument coming from such a fragile, small, young woman (she is only twenty one years old). It was surprising she sounded so assured and strong, given her newness on the lo-fi scene. Less than a year later comes this little nuggest of goodness, her Stridulum EP. And while her debut was something of a small masterpiece, this EP shows a marked improvement.
