Original lead guitarist Topham left and was replaced by Eric Clapton in October 1963. Crawdaddy Club impresario Giorgio Gomelsky became the Yardbirds manager and first record producer. Under Gomelsky's guidance the Yardbirds toured Britain as the back-up band for blues legend Sonny Boy Williamson II in December 1963 and early 1964, recording live tracks on 8 December and other dates . The resulting album of mostly American blues and R&B covers, Five Live Yardbirds, was released by Columbia nine months later, and it failed to enter the UK albums charts. Over time Five Live gained stature as one of the few quality live recordings of the era, and as a historical document of both the British "rock and roll boom" in the.
Eric Patrick Clapton, CBE (born 30 March 1945) is an English rock and blues guitarist, singer, and songwriter. He is the only three-time inductee to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame: once as a solo artist and separately as a member of the Yardbirds and of Cream. They made their first switch in March 1965, when Eric Clapton left and was quickly replaced by Jeff Beck. Their first album, Five Live Yardbirds, established the band as one of the leaders on the London blues scene when it was released the previous December with Clapton. He had even, by this time, acquired the self-mocking nickname of Slowhand, after the audience’s derisive slow hand-clapping when a Yardbirds set came to a halt after he broke a string. Behind the scenes, Clapton was not happy. Besides, he was unwilling to replace a musician of Clapton’s stature. Instead, he recommended Jeff Beck.
Legend says Clapton split over "For Your Love. However, it wasn’t until October 1963 that Eric cultivated his style and became known as the best R&B guitar player on the English pub circuit, joining Keith Relf, Paul Samwell-Smith, Jim McCarty and Chris Dreja as a member of the Yardbirds. Shortly after playing the Fairfield Halls in South London as part of the 1963 American Folk Blues Festival Sonny Boy Williamson met the Yardbirds at a gig, around the time Eric Clapton replaced guitarist Top Topham in the original line-up of the band. A key influence on Eric Clapton, Jimi Hendrix and Stevie Ray Vaughan, Buddy Guy put the Louisiana hurricane in 1960s electric Chicago blues as a member of Muddy Waters' band and as a house guitarist at Chess Records. A native of the Baton Rouge area, he combined a blazing modernism with a fierce grip on his roots, playing frantic leads heavy with swampy funk on Howlin' Wolf's "Killing Floor" and Koko Taylor's "Wang Dang Doodle" as well as on his own Chess sides and the fine series of records he made with harp man Junior Wells. Legend has it that Johnson made a deal with the devil to acquire his guitar gifts. There was certainly a lot of daredevilry in his flouting of standard tempos and harmonics; his records are breathtaking displays of melodic development and acute brawn. But Clapton was already soloing with the improvisational nerve that has dazzled fans and peers for forty years.
