Kerstin Thorborg (May 19, 1896 - April 12, 1970) was a Swedish opera singer. The contralto Kerstin Thorborg was one of the best dramatic Wagnerian singers in the two decades between 1930 and 1950. In addition, she was endowed with a beautifully steady and intense tone. Born in Venjan, Sweden, Kerstin Thorborg studied singing at the Royal College of Music, Stockholm

The soloists are Vina Bovy, Kerstin Thorborg, Jan Peerce, and Ezio Pinza. Toscanini followed all of Beethoven's manuscripts very astutely and it showed by the timings of the metronome. While W. Furtwangler would record this work in 75 minutes or so, Toscanini believed Beethoven's markings showed a much faster tempo of around 63-65 minutes. This 1938 recording shows the timings opf the four movements as: 12:58; 12:38; 13:59; and the finale timed at 23:51. This, I believe, is the tempo that ole Ludwig would have preferred.

Album · 2012 · 5 Songs. Symphony No. 9 in D minor, Op. 125, "Choral": I. Allegro ma non troppo, un poco maestoso. By Friedrich von Schiller & Ludwig van Beethoven. 3. 125, "Choral": II. Molto vivace.

Jan Peerce was born Jacob Pincus Perelmuth to a Jewish family. His parents, Louis and Henya Perelmuth, came from the village of Horodetz, formerly in Poland, now Belarus. Their first child, a daughter, died in an epidemic. Peerce first sang with Toscanini on February 6, 1938, in Carnegie Hall in a broadcast performance of Beethoven's Ninth Symphony; the soloists also included soprano Vina Bovy, mezzo-soprano Kerstin Thorborg, and bass Ezio Pinza. Peerce joined the roster of principal tenors at the Philadelphia La Scala Opera Company (PLSOC) in 1938.
