Cuban music has its principal roots in Spain and West Africa, but over time has been influenced by diverse genres from different countries. Important among these are France (and its colonies in the Americas), and the United States. Cuban music has been immensely influential in other countries. Vernacular theatre of various types often includes music. Formats rather like the British Music Hall, or the American Vaudeville, still occur, where an audience is treated to a potpourri of singers, comedians, bands, sketches and speciality acts. Even in cinemas during the silent movies, singers and instrumentalists appeared in the interval, and a pianist played during the films. Cuban music from A to Z. Revised by Sue Steward. Further, Henequeneros and Citricultores, both of which had been successful in earlier series, merged to become Matanzas. For the first time the teams were split into 4 groups rather than 2.
