The Rising Storm is an American rock group that was active at Phillips Academy in Andover, Massachusetts, United States, between 1965 and 1967. Their music is considered to belong in the folk rock and garage rock genres. The original members of the group were Bob Cohan (guitar), Todd Cohen (bass), Charlie Rockwell (keyboards), Tom Scheft (drums), Tony Thompson (guitar, lead vocal), and Rich Weinberg (guitar, vocals).
Calm Before, the 1967 album by The Rising Storm, is a touchstone of a distinct time and its music. It also is a testament to that music’s timelessness: Fifty years after it was made, the album still resonates. Its 12 tracks - haunting ballads about heartbreak, upbeat dance tunes, and explosive rockers - all capture the spirit of the mid-’60s, and the innocence, longing, restlessness and sheer exuberance of adolescence. The six members of The Rising Storm started playing music together in early 1965 in a jug band consisting of the 20 students who lived in the same sophomore dorm at Phillips Academy, a prep school in Andover, Mass. Biography by Richie Unterberger. Prep-school garage band whose sole 1967 LP, financed by the band, belatedly made them cult heroes. Alive A. ee Full Discography.
The Rising Storm rocks with the controlled frenzy of The Remains (even tearing open the album with their explosive Don’t Look Back ), but manage to layer in a thin film of psychedelia. The contemplative original numbers are the real gems on this record. Who Doesn’t Know, Frozen Laughter, and The Rain Falls Down are three must-hear folk-tinged treats. Mr. Wind with it’s lovely, lilting melody and the rollicking Bright Lit Blue Skies were both tunes borrowed from local Boston garage rocker contemporaries, The Rockin’ Ramrods, clearly heroes to the Storm.
