Album · 2012 · 9 Songs. Jump-started by the bristling guitar loop of Furnace Skies, 2012’s Toward the Low Sun announces the Dirty Three’s return with immediate oomph after a seven-year break between albums. But they also display close-quarters tenderness on Rain Song, as if they were huddled next to a nursery and trying not to stir a sleeping baby. Toward the Low Sun Dirty Three.
On Toward The Low Sun, Aussie post-rockers Dirty Three have yet again achieved a beautiful post-rock sound both ingenuously carefree and wisely tempered, an impressive feat this far into their careers. Toward The Low Sun may not be as raw or brooding as releases like 1998’s Ocean Songs, but it’s just as thoughtful and redolent of both location and mood. Essential Tracks: Moon On The Land, Ashen Snow, and The Pier.
Dirty Three is an Australian instrumental rock band, consisting of Warren Ellis (violin and bass guitar), Mick Turner (electric and bass guitars) and Jim White (drums), which formed in 1992. Their 1996 album Horse Stories was voted by Rolling Stone as one of the top three albums of the year. Two of their albums have peaked into the top 50 on the ARIA Albums Chart, Ocean Songs (1998) and Toward the Low Sun (2012).
