The Complete Concert 1964: My Funny Valentine + Four and More. Miles' quintet (with George Coleman, Herbie Hancock, Ron Carter and Tony Williams) was a band for the ages, one that performed with an incandescent beauty remarkable even for them on February 12, 1964 at Lincoln Center. Their explorations of All of You; Stella by Starlight; All Blues; I Thought About You, and the title classic are joined by revelatory new notes by Carter! Track Listings. Disc: 1. One of the finest live albums in the history of jazz, My Funny Valentine presents the Miles Davis Quintet live at the Lincoln Centre's Philharmonic Hall in 1964. Surrounded by the vibrant and youthful rhythm section of Herbie Hancock (piano), Ron Carter (bass) and Tony Williams (drums), Davis was enjoying a strong new surge of creativity, and played with a stunning level of invention and passion throughout. Miles Davis In Concert.

The first Miles Davis record that I got with Tony Williams was The Complete Concert: 1964 (My Funny Valentine + Four & More). I’d never heard the drums played so powerfully and with the undeniable swing he encompassed. Tony could go from a whisper to a roar-all within the same tune. A Love Supreme by John Coltrane. You can’t listen to an individual song from the album-each track flows into the next. And the way Haynes plays the drums makes the kit sound more like a melodic voice than anything else. His style of playing can be heard in Tony Williams’ output, but Roy Haynes just has an ebb and flow that appeals more to me. Lorenzo Siciliano. Dave Brubeck, Time Out. Joe Morello’s laid-back, less-is-more approach made me realize that jazz doesn’t have to be busy and abstract to still be good groove-oriented music.
