Sunbather is the second studio album by the American metal band Deafheaven. After the release of their debut record Roads to Judah, the then two piece group consisting of George Clarke and Kerry McCoy began work on Sunbather under the label Deathwish and recorded in several days in January 2013. The recording process brought a third member into the fold with drummer Dan Tracy who would go on to become a permanent fixture of the band.
Real Name: Evral Davey. Amy The Sunbather (Single).
Sunbather is a future classic, no matter where you pigeonhole it, and that’s the mark of a true sonic masterpiece. Black metal, not black metal, just call it what it is: perfect. Many bands go through their entire career without making an album as well crafted, fully realized, and downright gorgeous as Sunbather, and somehow, Deafheaven have managed to nail it on their second outing, with an album that seems to get bigger and more affective with each listen.
But the four long tracks simply transcend everything and often deliver knee wilting melodic peaks and personal ambient valleys that defy black metal traits while still clearly delivering elegantly rendered black metal riffs . But it's albums like Sunbather that make me feel truly privileged to be a metal fan and once in rare while, be exposed to acts like Deafheaven.
I held my breath and drove through a maze of wealthy homes And I watched how green the trees were And I watched how green the trees were And I watched the steep walkways and the white fences. I gripped the wheel I gripped the wheel I gripped the wheel I gripped the wheel. I sweated against the leather I sweated against the leather I watched the dogs twist through the wealthy garden I watched the dogs twist through the wealthy garden I watched the dogs. I watched you lay on a towel in grass that exceeded the height of your legs. Sunbather expands on a specific memory of George Clarke’s, as he drove around the affluent parts of San Luis Obispo (where his mother lives) and observed the extreme income inequality on display there. As such, it is fitting as a title track, as much of the album expands on this idea.
Sunbather is a definite leap from the somewhat mediocre Roads of Judah and will undoubtedly receive critical acclaim throughout the board. Yet whilst I am immune to some of the ecstatic praise leveled at this album, I greatly enjoy it, and would definitely urge open minded metalheads to listen to this album. Whilst it’s not a masterpiece, it’s close and I will most certainly be playing this much more in the future.

Sunbather isn’t a bad album by any means, but don’t believe the hype about it being the best black metal album ever.
