In the early '80s a loose aggregate of musicians - many of whom were former Mothers Of Invention (MOI) - began performing as the Grandmothers. The band centred on the talents of seminal Frank Zappa sidemen Jimmy Carl Black (dian of the group), Bunk Gardner (sax/trumpet/flute) and Don Preston (keyboards)

In the early '80s a loose aggregate of musicians - many of whom were former Mothers Of Invention (MOI) - began performing as the Grandmothers. A primary example being "Thunderbuns VS The Kumb Nut" from Cantrelli. When the Grandmothers regrouped in the '80s, many of these tracks were also revived for the Welcome Back (1980) long player. Much to Zappa's dismay, the band also began to recreate some MOI material that they reclaimed as their own - such as Black's "Lonesome Cowboy Burt". A Mother Of An Anthology (1993) is mostly recommended for the insatiable Zappa enthusiast, while the more tempered listener might find some of the sides a bit contrived.

The Mothers of Invention was an American rock band from California. Formed in 1964, their work is marked by the use of sonic experimentation, innovative album art, and elaborate live shows. Originally an R&B band called the Soul Giants, the band's first lineup included Ray Collins, David Coronado, Ray Hunt, Roy Estrada and Jimmy Carl Black. Frank Zappa was asked to take over as the guitarist following a fight between Collins and Coronado, the band's original saxophonist/leader.

Mother of an Anthology. what else did you expect? This disc is incredibly uneven, although that doesn't necessarily mean it's bad; the ex-Mothers just played so many different styles that this Anthology can't help sounding extremely hodge-podgey. But it's almost all worth it for Mary Jane, which is up there with Zappa's "Aybe Sea" (from Burnt Weenie) in the category of unlikely, unexpected beauty.
