Brahms: The Four Symphonies. Founded as EMI's studio orchestra by producer Walter Legge, the Philharmonia was a supple and virtuosic ensemble with the ability to adapt quickly to different conductors. With warm, clear strings as a base and colorful winds and brass on top, the Philharmonia's ensemble was perhaps not quite as sharp as the NBC's after 15 years under the excitable Italian, but neither were the players as tightly wrapped as the New York musicians . He asked for one of the Brahms Haydn Variations to be repeated 'purely for the pleasure of it'. Pettitt says it was the scurrying No 5, but I have a hunch that it was No 6, with its vigorous rhythms, as joyful a performance as I have ever heard. Walter Legge fought hard to get these live recordings officially issued, but everything was against him, not least contractually.

The theme, thought for many years to be by Haydn, is now thought to be by his pupil, Ignaz Pleyel. The second movement of which is based on an old Burgenland chant entitled "Chorale St. Anthony". The two settings are identical in length (despite some repeats being written out in the 2-piano score), but tempo indications have some interesting differences in places.
