This is the second Albert Hammond Jr. album released since the Strokes' last album, 2006's First Impressions of Earth. The rumor mill may be aching for new Strokes album details, but Hammond- always pegged as one of the band's creative forces- is doing his best to ensure our survival until then, and the extra face time's well-deserved. Hammond follows his solid debut Yours to Keep with another tasty helping of power-pop, though on ¿Cómo te Llama? he sheds the inherent modesty of a solo spin-off and aims higher.

While you were waiting for the Strokes to get bored of looking cool with no place to go, Albert Hammond, Jr. has put together his second solo record. It was recorded in a studio you will never afford (Electric Lady) with friends more privileged than you will ever have (Sean Lennon) and if it’s anywhere near as good as his surprisingly sturdy debut, we’ll welcome it with open ears. All of that said, when it’s come to the album art, he’s surprisingly camera shy. Also (not) pictured: Matt Romano, Marc Philippe Eskenazi, Josh Lattanzi. Also pictured: Cool apartment. There's a fine line between vintage rock revision and progressive insight-Hammond Jr. has mastered the balance. 80. Working more closely with his band, Hammond has given his songs more dimension, and the ambition.
I actually liked Albert Hammond, J. s first solo record but I always felt it had its specific time and place. So, to be greeted by a guitar riff and drumbeat a little more reminiscent of the Strokes was a bit of a surprise. Album opener "Bargain of the Century does take a slower turn during its verses but Hammond manages to keep the pace more like Is This It than his former solo self. Victory at Monterey is the definite album standout, with "GFC coming in a close second, both for the simplicity that makes them unforgettably charming.
