Billy Zoom (born Tyson Kindell on February 20, 1948, in Savanna, Illinois) is an American guitarist. Although best known as a founding member of punk rock band X, Zoom has also worked with rockabilly legend Gene Vincent, The Blasters, Etta James, Big Joe Turner, and dozens of other major recording artists. He is known for his grinning stage presence and tendency to make eye contact with audience members.
X is an American rock band, formed in Los Angeles in 1977, among the first wave of punk. The original members are vocalist Exene Cervenka, vocalist-bassist John Doe, guitarist Billy Zoom and drummer D. J. Bonebrake. The band released seven studio albums from 1980 to 1993. After a period of inactivity during the mid- to late 1990s, X reunited in the early 2000s, and currently tours, as of 2019.
Frontman John Doe talks to Billboard about the beloved guitarist who "can play Chuck Berry s-- and it's still punk-rock. Rarely in rock and roll has any musician generated so much endearment while keeping as closed-mouthed as X guitarist Billy Zoom. Because he’s mysterious! says bandmate John Doe. People project their ideas of who Billy Zoom is. He’s nice but he doesn’t say much - both qualities that are hard to come by in music nowadays.
John Nommensen Duchac (born February 25, 1953), known professionally as John Doe, is an American singer, songwriter, actor, poet, guitarist and bass player. Having seen John Doe in many configurations over many years, he never disappoints. John Doe was fantastic I loved the seating so you could see everyone playing. It was special to meet John Doe and have him sign our CD's. I really like the promoters they were friendly and wanted to make sure everyone had a great time. James was a great asset to the show.
