You're the Man" is a song composed by singer Marvin Gaye and songwriter Kenneth Stover and released on the Motown subsidiary, Tamla, in the summer of 1972. Composed primarily on the basis of the 1972 presidential election, the song was supposedly the first release from Gaye's next album, You're the Man, but the song's modest success forced Gaye to shelve the album in protest.

You’re The Man is the first-ever planned lost Tamla/Motown album from Marvin Gaye. Includes three tracks newly mixed by SaLaAM ReMi. The album also includes a rare long version of Marvin Gaye’s cancelled Christmas single, as well as an unreleased vault mix of its instrumental B-side, and new essay by Marvin’s biographer, David Ritz. You’re The Man was the album originally proposed to follow-up the monumental What’s Going On. The release coincides with the 60th anniversary of the Motown label and also Marvin Gaye’s 80th Birthday (April 2). TRACKLIST Disc: 1 1. You're The Man (Side A) . .
Upon its release in 2019, You're the Man was billed as a "lost" album - an album intended to appear between Marvin Gaye's 1971 masterwork What's Going On and 1973's Let's Get It On. The story isn't quite so simple.
Marvin Gaye’s 1972 lost album, You’re the Man, will finally be released March 29th, just days before what would’ve been the musician’s 80th birthday, April 2nd. You’re the Man was supposed to be the follow-up to Gaye’s 1971 classic, What’s Going On. Gaye recorded the tracks for the would-be record in Detroit and Los Angeles during a particularly prolific period, but none of them – save the titular single – were released at the time. Side 1 1. You’re The Man 2. The World Is Rated X 3. Piece of Clay 4. Where Are We Going? Side 2 1. I’m Gonna Give You Respect 2. Try It, You’ll Like It 3. You Are That Special One 4. We Can Make It Baby. He reworked You’re the Man in the hazy, shimmering style of that album, and recorded Woman of the World – an ostensibly breezy ode to feminism that on closer inspection seems to be grousing that women’s lib is interfering with the more important business of Marvin Gaye getting his leg over.
You're the Man, Pt. I & II (Single Version). The World Is Rated X (Alternate Mix).
You're The Man. Marvin Gaye. 47 years after its release was shelved by its creator, we're finally getting to hear this long lost LP in its entirety - not just bits and pieces. A wonderful addition to the Marvin Gaye catalog.

Well You been talkin’, talkin’ to the people Tryin’ to get them to go your way Telling us, telling us not to worry You say we won’t be led astray We’re so tired of your signifying How do we know, till it’s too late Whether or not you’ve been lying? Think about the mistakes you make I believe, sir, that humanity’s at stake You see, busin’, busin’ is just one issue
