Bobby Whitlock is the debut solo album by American songwriter and rock musician Bobby Whitlock, released in early 1972. The album features all of the former members of Derek and the Dominos – Whitlock, Eric Clapton, Carl Radle and Jim Gordon – although never all together. Other contributors include George Harrison, the sessions for whose 1970 triple album All Things Must Pass had led to the formation of the Dominos; Delaney and Bonnie Bramlett; and ex-Manfred Mann bassist Klaus Voormann.

Bobby Whitlock - Coco Carmel 'Why Does Love Got To Be So Sad?' Transcription. Whitlock recorded his debut solo album, Bobby Whitlock (1972), at London's Olympic Studios in 1971, with Andy Johns as his co-producer. The recording took place before the abortive sessions for the Dominos' second studio album; a press release for the 2013 reissue of Bobby Whitlock gives the recording date as starting in March 1971, while Dominos biographer Jan Reid.

Raised in Memphis, Tennessee, Whitlock began his musical career while still a teenager, as a session pianist at the legendary Stax Studios. Early on, Delaney Bramlett and Bonnie Bramlett, the husband-and-wife team behind Delaney, Bonnie & Friends, heard Whitlock perform at a club and invited him to join them as keyboardist.

A former member of Delaney & Bonnie's backup band, as well as a member of Derek & the Dominoes, Bobby Whitlock's first solo record treads much of the same ground. With contributions from Delaney Bramlett, Whitlock turns in a solid effort filled with southern gospel influences ("A Day Without Jesus") and rootsy rockers. On the mournful ballad "Dreams of a Hobo" Whitlock shows that all his good material was not spent on the Derek & the Dominoes project.

Bobby Whitlock: I was with Delaney & Bonnie and them. I was the last one to leave that organization. Everybody else did (Joe Cocker's album) Mad Dogs & Englishmen. I stayed with them and helped them do a couple more albums. I spent a lot of time out there at Friar Park. George plays me all this stuff. He wanted to do his first record after The Beatles - he never got to do his own stuff, just one song on each album. He wanted to know what Eric and I thought about putting a band together for his album. Eric and I were already talking about it, and we had already talked about having Jim Keltner come over and be in our band. Keltner was the original drummer, and Carl Radle.
