But he's not just about flying fingers, although they get a heavy workout on "Beams. Equally important is mood, and he can establish that wonderfully on his instrument, as he proves on the slow-moving "Solitude" and "Curfew. There's nothing to fault in his playing, which is never less than stellar. The problem lies in the programming, which serves solely as a backdrop. There's no character to it, just a blandness which ends up detracting from the overall worth of the music.
His second album, BEAMS ~ AGATSUMA II released by Domo Records in the US, led him to a successful tour of the East Coast. In 2005, he toured the EU, and won the Japan Gold Disc Award for the second time with EN, his sixth album. The next album to follow in 2009 was AGA-SHIO by a two-piece unit of Agatsuma and Satoru Shionoya, a pianist and producer. In 2010, an extensive tour took the unit to nine different countries in Japan, Europe and Africa.

Beams - Agatsuma II.
Agatsuma began studying the Tsugaru-jamisen at the age of six, and earned his first accolade - top prize at the 1988 All-Japan Tsugaru-jamisen Competition - at 14. This was followed in 1995 and 1996, by top honours at the Tsugaru-jamisen National Competition, said to be the country's most prestigious. Despite the high acclaim he received in the hogaku, or traditional Japanese music world, for his accomplishments, Agatsuma did not rest on his laurels
